Track Meals:

The Daily Tracking program uses the colors – green, yellow, and red to help you choose meals that accumulate to meet your caloric goal.  It calculates a weighted Balance Factor that reflects the balance of macronutrients you are having at each meal and as a daily total. Do your best to stay in green, meaning that your meals are balanced.

Meeting your daily caloric goal and eating a good balance of macronutrients at each meal, optimizes your metabolism, helps you burn excess body fat, and reduces your risk of disease.

What is the Balance Factor?

The Balance Factor is the macronutrient value of a food or meal.  It is calculated using the product’s Nutrition Facts table and provides a guide for the consumer to make healthy choices.  Healthy choices are those that have the recommended balance of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

To use the Balance Factor, simply scan a product’s barcode or search for a product’s brand name or food type using the Balanced Cafe app. You have found a healthy choice if the product’s Balance Factor is close to 0 or less.  Products with high Balance Factors can be part of a healthy choice if they are combined with a product having a low Balance Factor.

Foods that have a Balance Factor close to 0 or less are always healthy choices.  Choose healthy meals where multiple products’ Balance Factors combine to become a single Balance Factor close to zero.  For example, a healthy meal choice would be a piece of toast with a Balance Factor of +12 combined with  an egg with a Balance Factor of -12 and to give a combined Balance Factor of 0.

Use the Balanced Cafe app to help you make meals with Balance Factors close to 0. As your body’s metabolism responds to eating balanced meals, your healthy choices will gravitate towards a certain Balance Factor ideal for your body.  A Balance Factor is specific to each individual and may fluctuate slightly in response to external cues such as exercise. However, there is no ideal Balance Factor that accelerates fat burn or that the user is trying to reach.  It is the consistency of eating at a similar Balance Factor at each meal that makes users successfully reach their fat loss goals.

Calorie Graph

To access the Calorie Graph, tap 4 the Luv of Food’s ‘Heart’. This button gives you direct access to the How Am I Doing? screen and your progress graphs.

The Calorie Graph indicates whether you are eating enough calories and meeting your caloric goal.

Your individual Caloric Goal is the minimum number of calories you must eat to maintain your metabolism and permit the body to burn fat. It is written in the centre of the green zone on the graph.

Your individual Caloric Need is the amount of calories your body requires each day and is written at the top of the yellow zone.

There is a 500 calorie deficit between your Caloric Need and your Caloric Goal.

If your app is set to Fat Burning, your Caloric Goal will be 500 calories less than your Caloric Need. (Though eating 500 calories less per day does NOT equal a weight loss of 1 lb per week, it is safe to have a daily Caloric Goal of 500 calories less than your Caloric Need to elicit a fat burning response).

Maintenance Graph to Stay the Ideal Size

Your goal is simple: Eat enough calories to stay within the green and yellow zones. The closer you are to your Caloric Goal (green zone), the closer to 500 calories you can burn each day in Fat Burning Mode or the easier it is to maintain your metabolism and stay your ideal size in Maintenance Mode.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you are on a diet. Balanced Café is not about dieting. Balanced Café makes sure you are getting enough calories to permit the body to burn unwanted body fat and uses the Balance Factor to ensure you are getting a balance of the three macronutrients. This is your formula for success.

Staying within the Caloric Zones!

This graph shows an inadequate caloric intake resulting in a poor appetite, a reduced metabolism and an inability to burn body fat.

Poor Appetite and Reduced Metabolism

This graph shows ‘Reactive Eating’ – undereating followed by overeating and an inability to burn body fat due to the yo-yo effect of inconsistent calories on blood sugar. Having a caloric goal to reach each day prevents the craving of poor quality foods and uncontrolled snacking at night time.

Reactive Eating

Tap BF in the bottom left corner of the graph screen to see how balanced your eating habits are.

Testimonial

“I’ve always been a crappy eater – never enough, never consistent (too busy), and what I did eat was lots of fast foods, junk foods at TV time, and the like, but I was generally fit and in good health.

But in January of 2020, I got an eye opener at a too long ignored routine physical exam: my fasting glucose (sugar) levels (6.3) had jumped up and put me in the risk area for diabetes, and my cholesterol numbers (Chol 6.4 / LDL 4.13 / TG 1.90) were now exceeding current medical guidelines. And my weight had been creeping up bit by bit over the years in spite of my exercise regimes: not so you’d notice, but a couple of kilos/pounds year by year, every year. Yikes! So my doctor gave me some warnings and said we’d better check again in a couple of months.

I had been working with Shannon helping her develop a smartphone app that embraced her ideas and she suggested that I myself should give it a try… to work on getting my blood work numbers down, better control of my weight, and overall better health. I wasn’t entirely convinced of all her theories, but I thought I’d amuse her: eat more? (ridiculous) and mix and match foods each meal to get a zero or lower ‘balance factor’ number (impossible)

So: I started using her Balanced Cafe app to measure, monitor and advise me: it told me how much to eat (wow: probably 25% more than I had ever eaten daily), and matching up meal ingredients to get that ‘balanced’ number. I never changed what I ate, just how much and how I combined them in each meal to get a better ‘balance factor’ value.

It wasn’t easy at first, forcing myself to eat more, and more regularly, and working up meal choices that netted each meal to get a better ‘balance factor’. But funny things happened: I now felt ‘full’ by the end of the day, and as time went on, didn’t have the desire for the junk food at TV time. I didn’t notice any weight changes but after about 3 months stepped on the scales and found I had dropped over 5 kilos! (12 pounds) And better yet, those golf slacks that I couldn’t wear any longer because I was popping the snaps – I discovered they weren’t popping any more!

Better yet, I completed another blood test after 5 months and found:

  • my glucose levels had dropped dramatically (from 6.3 down to 4.8), and I was now in the lower part of the ‘ideal’ range!
  • my cholesterol levels (Chol 3.94 / LDL 2.11 / TG 0.82) had cut in half!
  • And now, I’m down 8 kilos! (18 pounds)

Shannon, her theories, her Balanced Café app, and her enthusiasm in getting more people on a great routine to manage their eating habits and general health – well, it doesn’t happen instantly (no instant gratification), but her program philosophy works! As the classic rock group (the Monkees) said in their song – “I’m a Believer! “ – Thank you, Shannon!”
