The Kind(er) Choice

Who doesn’t love peanut butter and chocolate together?  KIND bars have captured that perfect combination in, not 2, but 3 of their bars.  KIND has a Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Healthy Grains Bar, a Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter Healthy Grains Bar, and a Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Bar.

How on earth do you choose? This is the conundrum that our ancestors never had.  They knew what went into the food they ate because they made it themselves and fed the entire family.   The fact that we don’t have the luxury of someone feeding us has made it necessary to buy some foods that are pre-packaged and not homemade. This is NOT a terrible thing…it just means we need to be diligent about choosing foods that are meeting our nutritional requirements.

Balance Factor to the rescue!

Without having to look up the recipe, navigate the nutritional facts table or peruse the ingredients list, you can scan the barcode on any one of those KIND bars to see which one suits your momentary needs.

Here’s your results:

Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Healthy Grains Bar      BF 13     Cals 150

Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter Healthy Grains Bar      BF 11     Cals 160

Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Bar                                  BF -8      Cals 200

Knowing a BF close to 0 is a good balance of all three macronutrients, a BF > 0 indicates a higher ratio of carbohydrates to fats and proteins, and a BF < 0 indicates a lower ratio of carbohydrates to fats and proteins, you can decide what ‘KIND’ of energy you are looking for.

Still confused? Then let’s look at the BF this way.

If you are looking for some instant energy because you are about to do a workout or have been active and feel like your blood sugars have gone a bit too low, you choose a bar with a BF that is higher than 0.  Either of the Healthy Grains Bars will work.

If you are looking for some energy that will sustain you until your next meal and aren’t requiring a burst of energy, you choose the bar with the negative BF.

The bars with the higher than 0 BFs will help you recover more quickly from low blood sugar or provide your muscles with some fuel to use immediately.  The bar with the lower BF will help you control your blood sugar to maintain a normal level and keep you going for longer than the bars with the higher BF. It’s not so much the product that makes us healthy or unhealthy; it’s choosing the right balance of nutrients to meet our needs that makes the difference.

Your lifestyle, your choice, your health!
